The Distant Future…the Year 2000

Any Flight of the Conchords fans out there? I used to watch that video anytime I was feeling a bit blue and needed a pick me up.

ANYWAY…I’ve got quite a lot of races coming up and I’m pretty darn excited about them. Without further ado:

1) Not actually signed up for one…but I’d like to do a Turkey Trot. I never have before, and ever since the Redondo Beach Fourth of July 5K I’d really like to get in as many holiday races as possible! I purposely bought an Indian Princess costume 50% off after Halloween for this. That and as a backup costume for #3 (see below). Anyway, the problem is I’m not sure where I’ll be for Thanksgiving yet…

2) Venice Beach/Santa Monica Christmas 5K/10K – 12/8/12

Keeping in theme with the holiday races! There’s an option to run both the 5K and the 10K which is the plan…again, haven’t registered yet due to my family’s propensity for last-minute travel!

3) Tinkerbell Half Marathon – 1/20/13

Reaaaaaaaaaaally excited about this seeing as I signed up for it the day registration opened! I’m definitely running in costume, and I have a few ideas in mind, although one is my favorite. Steve and I are also staying Sunday night and taking Monday off so we can spend the day in the park! I LOVE DISNEYLAND.

4) Redondo Beach 10K – 2/3/13 (Super Bowl Sunday!)

Local race, costumes, beach…need I say more? I’ve never done this one before but running around Redondo I always see people in their 10K shirts…next year so will I! AND I get to do the course TWICE since the training for LA calls for 12 miles that day…hey, at least I can eat whatever I want at someone’s Super Bowl Party. You’ve been warned.

5) Mermaid Half Marathon San Diego – 2/10/13

I actually learned about this race through this girl…it seems like a great women’s-focused girl-power race…small and cheap (just how I like ‘em?). I’ve got 19 miles on the books that day, so my friend Wendy and I will be doubling up on the 10k and Half Marathon. Pray for us.

6) LA Marathon – 3/17/13

2013 LAM Logo Final.HorizontalwR.293

The big kahuna. I’ve had my sights set on this marathon for a while. I’m from LA, it’s an awesome course, and PV Runners is super excited about it! I’ve heard mixed reviews about the race, mainly the logistics, but I want to judge for myself. Doesn’t hurt that I’ll get an extra medal for the LA-SF Challenge!

Come to mama…

7) San Francisco Marathon – 6/16/13

Love this logo.

I went a little crazy and signed up for the SF Full. I’ve ran the first half twice, in 2010 and 2012, and LOVED it both times. I love running in San Francisco…but those wimpy half medals make me sad, so now I’m going big or going home. Probably the latter…on a stretcher.

8) Ragnar Socal ??? – 4/19-4/20

Another race inspired by the likes of Skinny Runner and SarahOUAL. This is really up in the air, as I’ve just started sowing the seeds amongst friends. Hopefully it will happen! For some reason being stuck in a van with sweaty friends with little sleep and running at all hours of the day sounds AWESOME to me. Plus I really want that car sticker. (Do we sense a theme with material possessions here?)

9) New York City Marathon?! – 11/2/13

Extreeeeeeeemely up in the air, especially given the events of this year. But…NYCM has been a dream of mine. Plus, it’s in November, which means it’s a birthday marathon. The reason I NEED to do it next year is it’s the big 3-0! What better way to ring in a new decade of life than by running one of the most iconic marathons in the world?

So uh…my fingers hurt just typing all that up. Hopefully I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew…

Workouts of the Week

Sun: Does studying count as a workout?

Mon: 3 mi with pup on the Strand. Super creepy and Halloween-appropriate fog rolling in.

Tue: Turbo Kick with Jen, abs, legs

Wed: Spooky Halloween 3 mi! Actually, not spooky at all. Rather sunny and beautiful. But I was ridiculously excited when I realized I had black and orange to wear.

Lilo is not impressed.

Yes, this is the end of October.

Really cute message from Nike+!

Thur: 2 mi to the gym, then BodyPump (Holy squat jumps, Batman)! Then 2 hours of dodgeball fun (lots of jumping and dancing…man I’m beat).

Pretty sunset run to the gym.

PS…as I was walking out the door to run to the gym, I said to myself “Round two” (as in, hopefully this run goes better than last week’s)…then “FIGHT!” automatically, a la Street Fighter.

Fri: Gentle Hatha Yoga at home

Sat: 8.3ish hilly miles with PV Runners.

Woo hoo! I know this isn’t a big deal to you “real runners” but this was my first “4-run” week. I’ve been running 3x a week for as long as I can remember…but with the LA Marathon looming it’s time to pump it up.

A few of my favorite things…

Things that are currently making me happy!

Birthday preparations:

This face:

This song: Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz (warning, not for the kiddos Winking smile )

These potholders:

From Anthropologie

My mom and I were in Anthropologie on Friday getting a bridal shower gift for my friend Claire. I saw these and literally squealed because 1) they’re super cute 2) my grandma collected scotties. Of course my mom insisted on getting them for me, and now every time I look at them I’ll think of Grandma Harlow.

NOT nose-picking.

World Dodgeball Society’s Halloween Spooktacular!

So I play this little sport called dodgeball. We have open gyms, leagues, as well as tournaments throughout the year. Don’t you scoff…it can actually be really competitive and a great workout! But mostly we have fun and dress up.

This past weekend was our annual Halloween Tournament. Even though the majority of us dress in costumes as much as possible, this tournament has to be my favorite because the creative genius that comes out of everyone is incredible!

This year we had some amazing themes: Austin Powers (complete with freakin sharks with freakin laser beams attached to their heads), Kill Bill (Steve’s team!), Mimes (they didn’t talk the ENTIRE tournament which is seriously difficult when you play dodgeball), old fogies, etc. I’m on an all-girl tournament team with a really inappropriate name: something that rhymes with “hunt” Punch, and we zombified ourselves for the tourney!

wdsSeriously frightening. (Photo by the talented Allison Knight)

Do I look intimidating? Or just special?  (image cred: Allison Knight)

They came in second place!

Winners! (Allison’s again, yes we have a professional photographer. We’re kind of a big deal).

Workouts of the Week

Mon: 3 miles with the pup on the strand

Tue: Turbo Kick with Jen, abs & legs

Wed: Rest.

Thur: Ran 1.75 miles to the gym then Bodypump for the first time evar! I’m still sore. PS, the run to the gym SUCKED. I figured I needed my water bottle, towel, phone, life savings (kidding) so I chose to run with a (non-running-appropriate) backpack that just made it miserable. I’m either going to need to suck it up and elliptical on Thursdays, or buy a water bottle at the gym and tuck a towel in my waistband. Sorry environment :/

Fri: Unscheduled rest…oops.

Sat: 6 miles with PV Runners, then the World Dodgeball Society Halloween Spooktacular Dodgeball Tournament!

Pretty lucky to live and run here!

More on this craziness later…

Another slow-ish week, besides the new-to-me Bodypump biznass. I’m sort of taking it easy before training begins for the LA Marathon…eeee!

Nike Women’s Half-Marathon 2012

When we left off last, we were piling out of Linda’s van like a bunch of clowns. I had grand plans of running with Angelica for the entirety of the race. She’s much faster than me, even at her “Let’s just have fun!” pace, so I thought, dreamt, that maaaaaaaaybe I could finally get a PR, knowing full well that I may choke in the final miles due to my training being less than stellar.

And then I had to use the porto-potties. Don’t you hate those friends who you get into running, and not do they end up only faster than you but never seem to have the issues you do? I religiously stretch, do yoga, foam roll, etc etc and some people get away with nothing! Ugh. Winking smile

Anyhoozles, the long porto line and the impending start meant that I lost Angelica in the crowd, so I was on my own.

Honestly, there’s not much to report, in the way of my performance. I thought I ran has hard as a could and I was a bit disappointed with my time…2:32. Granted, there were a ton of hills and even more women to dodge around. Even so, I thought I had ran a smart race…I started conservatively, picked it up during the middle miles, and booked it (for me) for the last 2-3. Regardless, it was fun! Nike totally knows how to put on an event.

*The course. I love running in San Francisco!

*There were two Team in Training dudes dressed up like Tiffany Boxes

*The course support was great.

*Some of the greatest spectator signs I’ve ever seen. “You go Glen Coco!” and of course the Ryan Gosling meme “Hey Girl, that fuel belt makes your butt look great!”

*My training in Palos Verdes really conditioned me to tackle those hills (and the weaving in and out of women was a bonus calorie burner)

*While I love the “girl-power” feel of the race, I feel like most of these women don’t regularly run races. While that’s completely fine, it seems like most of them don’t know proper race etiquette, i.e. moving to the right when you need to walk. I actually heard one woman, walking in the middle of the lane, saying “Go around me!” Does she not realize it’s dangerous to stop suddenly in front of 10,000 women? I know Nike made a post on their facebook page about etiquette such as this, but maybe they can make these issues a little more prevalent.

/end rant.

*The winner of the FULL MARATHON crossed the finish right after me. It’s a little demoralizing (hey, at least she started before me…), but it was really cool to be able to see the winner so close.

So this happened:

What am I doing? Pooping in mid-air? Is that why the rest of the pack is behind me?

And this:

My second little blue box of the week! (Jen had given her bridesmaids a super cute Tiffany bracelet).

While looking for Angelica I was searching through the crowds and my eyes fell upon a familiar face…it was freakin’ Joan Benoit Samuelson! Literally a foot away from me! Joan, Kara Goucher and Shalane Flannagan. I was too in-shock and also focused on finding Angelica that it didn’t occur to me to ask for a picture until it was too late. Eh, I didn’t want to bother them anyway. I figured that if I stopped them for a picture then so would 10.000 other women.

Bling bling!

It was my first time racing in a skirt. I felt it was appropriate for a “women’s marathon”…I actually quite liked it!

After Angelica and I found each other we met up with Linda and her friends, and walked to her mom’s house which was only a few blocks away from the finish. We had our own little finish line party on the sidewalk outside her mom’s house.

Apple juice?

My college friend Terra picked me up and took me to the Haight for brunch! After visiting San Francisco several times throughout my life, I had never been to the Haight, so this was definitely a treat.

Plus I got to see this face!

922    923

I love San Francisco.

And then there are these. I was tempted to keep them in a glass case for all eternity…but I have been wearing them Smile with tongue out

And there you have it! My super belated craptastic recap of the Nike Women’s Marathon!
